Help Support the Michael J. Fox Foundation

In honor of Parkinson’s Awareness Month, we’ve partnered with the Michael J. Fox Foundation on a special cupcake that will be sold in stores and online throughout the month of April. $1.75 from the sale of each cupcake will go directly to MJFF and Parkinson’s disease research. Please visit any of our US locations or our online store to support these efforts.


More information on Parkinson’s disease can be found below:

  • An estimated one million people in the US – and five million people worldwide – are living with Parkinson’s disease (PD). This number is expected to grow with the aging population.
  • MJFF is not a celebrity charity or a patient advocacy organization – it is a leading scientific research organization. MJFF’s single-minded goal is to speed progress in Parkinson’s research and develop new treatments- and ultimately a cure- for PD. MJFF has in-house scientists and works closely with the pharmaceutical industry and academic researchers to prioritize research goals, answer questions and design trials.
  • MJFF is the world’s largest private funder of Parkinson’s disease research. To date, MJFF has given more than $325 million to research.
  • MJFF is actively seeking answers for the many questions that still remain about Parkinson’s disease. At present, we don’t know someone has PD until their symptoms have progressed. There is no definitive way to diagnose PD, and we don’t know the disease cause. Current therapies address some symptoms of PD, but there is no treatment that slows or stops disease progression. And there is no known cure.
  • Michael J. Fox often says “there is no ‘Department of Cures’” and there is nobody in charge of getting research results to patients (or anybody else). He and his foundation have leveraged the power of his celebrity not just to raise money to accelerate Parkinson’s research, but also to create a spirit of teamwork among scientists and to mobilize patients as part of the effort to find new treatments.
  • Michael J. Fox and MJFF inspire everyone to get involved and be part of the solution. Team Fox is MJFF’s grassroots fundraising network and is made up of thousands of people across the globe who find fun and creative ways (running, cycling, baking, zumba, etc.) to raise funds and awareness for MJFF and Parkinson’s research.   • MJFF has no endowment – so every dollar that is raised goes to promising research that may lead to new treatments, and ultimately a cure for Parkinson’s.

Schoola is Coola!

We are thrilled to be partnering with Schoola, a website that offers communities an easy, fun way of giving back to their local public schools. Schoola recently launched in New York City and we are proud to be offering a special Schoola voucher to local parents, teachers and school supporters. On Monday, we were lucky enough to visit a local school participating in the Schoola fundraising program: Harbor Science & Arts Charter School (K-8), located on the UWS of Manhattan. During our visit, Bobbie Lloyd, Magnolia Bakery’s President and “Chief Baking Officer,” was interviewed by “Live from the Couch” and we handed out cupcakes to one of Harbor’s kindergarten classes (they were very patient waiting for their cupcakes!). How to Bake: Red Velvet Whoopie Pies

We’re preparing for a blizzard here in NYC so we’ll most likely be baking up a storm this weekend! Baking is always a fun family activity and is a nice thing to do when the weather outside is a bit frightful. One of our favorite Valentine’s Day recipes is heart-shaped red velvet whoopie pies. It combines one our favorite cake flavors – red velvet – with a light whipped vanilla icing. Whoopie pies are a nice alternative to cupcakes, with the icing sandwiched between the cakes rather than on top. We think they’re the perfect combination of cake and icing – and aren’t too messy to eat!


Try out our red velvet whoopie pie recipe below. You can cut them out into different shapes, including hearts for Valentine’s Day. Stay safe and warm, everyone!

Magnolia Bakery’s Red Velvet Whoopie Pies


  • 3 – 1/3 cups cake flour (not self-rising)
  • ¾ cup (1 ½ sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 ¼ cups sugar
  • 3 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 6 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 ½ cups buttermilk
  • 1 ½ teaspoons cider vinegar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cakes – grease and lightly flour, three 9 x 2” round cake pans. Line the bottoms with parchment paper circles (or wax paper). Cupcakes – line 2 dozen cupcake liners with paper liners. Whoopie pies – grease and flour 2 Jelly roll pans (10 ½ x 15 ½) then line with parchment paper and grease and flour again.
  2. In a small bowl, sift the cake flour and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, on the medium speed of an electric mixer, cream the butter until smooth. Gradually add the sugar and beat until very light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the red food coloring, cocoa, and vanilla. Add to the batter and beat well. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  6. In a measuring cup, stir the salt into the buttermilk. Add to the batter in three parts, alternating with the flour. With each addition, beat until the ingredients are incorporated but do not overbeat.
  7. In a small bowl, stir together the cider vinegar and baking soda. Add to the batter and mix well. Using a rubber spatula, scrape down the batter in the bowl to make sure the ingredients are well blended and the batter is smooth.

Whoopie Pies: Pour 3-4 cups of batter into each prepared pan, bake for about 10 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. Let the layers cool in the pan. When completely cool using a cookie cutter, cut desired shapes, layer with whipped vanilla icing or your favorite buttercream!
